Tantalic Chloride / Tantalum pentachloride is white to light yellow powder appearance. It can be sublimated in carbon dioxide or dried chlorine gas. Soluble in anhydrous ethanol, chloroform, carbon tetracloride and potassium hydroxide, insoluble in sulfuric acid. It is commonly used as a raw material in tantalum chemistry. It readily hydrolyzes to form TaOCl3 and eventually to form tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5).
